This is one of those episodes I had to do.
I typically don’t bring guests back this quickly, but after my first conversation with Pat Jira, his story took a turn that deserved a Part 2.
In our first episode, Pat opened up about his battle with addiction and alcohol, going to rehab, getting sober, and the daily struggle of rebuilding his life.
Then, just when things seemed to be going in the right direction, Pat ended up detained at the controversial immigration detention facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz.”
How did he get there? What was it actually like inside? What were the conditions like? How long did he think he would be there? Was he going to be deported? What would happen to his daughter if he was? And after everything Pat had already overcome, could an experience like this threaten his sobriety?
I had a million questions — and I asked them.
Pat talks about what he experienced inside the detention center, the uncertainty surrounding his immigration status, the people he met, the lessons he took away from it, and what happens next.
Can he still be deported? What does his immigration situation look like now? Can he become a U.S. citizen? And how has this entire experience changed the way he looks at life, sobriety and being a father?
There were times Pat tried to graze over some of the tougher questions. I kept digging because I wanted to understand what really happened and what was going through his mind while he was there.
This episode is bigger than one detention center. It’s about addiction, recovery, immigration, uncertainty, fatherhood, consequences, second chances and what happens when life puts your sobriety to the ultimate test.
